It’s hilarious that non-Americans on Tumblr are all like “OMG DENNY’S TUMBLR MAKES ME WISH I LIVED IN AMERICA SO I COULD EAT THERE,” while us Americans will literally only eat at Dennys if it’s 3 in the morning and we’ve lost control of our life.

You don’t go to Denny’s. You end up at Denny’s.

Portal is probably the last major video game release that didn’t star a white, 18-35 year old white dude with short hair, stubble and a scowl. That game came out six years ago.

I don’t understand how people can get mad and confused when you point out that there’s not enough creativity or diversity in video games. Granted, there was definitely room for growth in the 80’s and 90’s, but we’ve fallen way behind since then. We used to have space pilot furries and master thieves. Dragons, bandicoots, hedgehogs and plumbers. Women who were archaeologists and bounty hunters.

So why are we still marketing games exclusively to fraternity douchebags? There’s no excuse for having such narrow goals in 2013.

THIS IS NOT OKAY.

Thank you! And people don’t get it when I explain this.

SHARING BECAUSE OF ALL REASON!

I agree with this save for Booker DeWitt and Nathan Drake. Both are great characters and go beyond your typical modern AAA game main character. Just because they happen to be white, male humans doesn’t mean they’re shallow and uninteresting. Booker especially. Just try refraining from judging a character by their appearance is all I ask.

Plus, many of the mascots you love are still here. Link is getting a new game very soon that people are praising as their new favorite Zelda game, Pokemon hasn’t been this big in a long time, Sly Cooper had a new game not too long ago, Rayman is back and going strong in not one but two fantastic recent games, Fire Emblem Awakening essentially brought back the franchise which was losing loyal fans quickly, and Megaman is being succeeded by Mighty No. 9. Not to mention new IP like Wonderful 101, Knack (which apparently sucks, but the character design is imaginative), Contrast (which stars a femme fatale who can turn into a shadow on the wall), Ni no Kuni, Brother: A Tale of Two Sons (where you control two siblings at the same time in a puzzle adventure), and Skullgirls. And then there’s the multitude of indie titles which is where creativity in character design thrives.

Honestly, if you want protagonists that aren’t shallow power fantasies then you’re really looking in the wrong place. Your stock AAA title these days is not aimed at you. It isn’t aimed at me either because I find those characters to be just as annoying as you do. However, I realize that it likely never will be aimed at me because gaming is bigger than it ever has been and therefore to make the most money, the big publishers cater to the biggest market. That market being your typical COD fanboy. I’d say that if you want to change that then don’t buy those games, but if you’re like me then you already aren’t buying them. Plus, even if you were buying those games and suddenly stopped it wouldn’t hurt their bottom line one bit. There is an army of people who love those games and more power to them. I’m not gonna shit on COD fanboys because I have no right to. So they enjoy something that I don’t, big deal. I realize the internet is full of people who get hurt over someone liking something they dislike and vice versa, but that’s not how it should work. Enjoy what you enjoy and leave them alone.

Just because these titles are the most marketed does not mean in any way that they are the ONLY thing to play. I just listed off some great games to get into and there are even more on the way. You want more creative and diverse character designs to become the norm again? Then show them how much we want them. Buy the games with the creativity behind them. Get your friends to buy them. Get them to get their friends to buy them. The only thing big companies listen to is money. If sales for creative games rivals that of the typical AAA fare then more companies will greenlight similar projects. Right now, making the next Mario or the next Kirby is risky. It’s a shame, but companies need money to run properly and these days those types of games don’t make a lot of it. You’re never gonna get COD fanboys to stop buying COD no matter how much you think it’s hurting the industry. So the best way to show the big publishers what we want is to buy what we want.

I think I may have repeated some points in this rant, but yeah. Gaming is not doomed, creativity still exists, and the best way to make creativity big again is to buy the current creative titles.

And also Commander Shepard isn’t inherently white or even a male. They can be any ethnicity, either sex, and they’re also pretty pansexual. That’s the beauty of Mass Effect.
